Congratulations on getting your Learner's Permit. The next step in the process is to develop your driving skills and knowledge so that you can graduate to a Provisional (P1) Licence.

Did you know for your driving test you must park your car in a space that is the length of your test car plus 2.4 metres? Did you know you must park within 300mm of the kerb? Allan Miller Driving Instructors do. There are technical parts to passing your driver's test that need preparation and practice.

Check out our Frequently Asked Questions for more information about learning to drive with Allan Miller.

There are 2 ways you can get your P's, using the log book CBT (Competency Based Training) or VORT (Vehicle On Road Test).  The method you use is up to you, but we can offer advice as to the best possible course for you. Come with your Qualified Supervising Driver to one of our Free Information Evenings to find out more.

Driving is a technical skill which requires specific knowledge. Road rules change all the time, and would have changed since your supervising driver took their driving test. When you learn to drive you must be able to demonstrate a good understanding of current driving rules and be able to give your instructor or examiner a practical demonstration of your driving skills.

The Government of South Australia through Transport SA recommends that drivers are taught by professional driving instructors.

Driving lessons at Allan Miller will ensure you know the technical information you need to progress to your P licence, as well as information to help keep you safe once you have your full driver's licence.

VORT (Vehicle On Road Test)
Taking your practical driving test is a technical excercise and the expectations of the test are specific. It is important to know the testing criteria before your VORT. Before you take your test we recommend that you spend time in a car with one of our instructors to go over the test process. Your instructor will assist you to learn the skills and information which could be tested, and point out the common areas that cause students to fail. They will also let you know if they think you are ready to take the test, and point out areas where you need to practice. Remember, there is a difference between being ready to take the test, being ready to have a licence and being ready to drive.

Click here to download Allan Miller Driving School's pre-test checklist which will give you an indication of the elements of VORT.   At Allan Miller, we aim to provide our students with the best possible chance of passing their VORT (which requires a result of 90% to pass).

CBT (Competency Based Training - sometimes referred to as Log Book)
While you can practice with your supervising driver (e.g. parent) you need to have specific tasks in your Driving Companion  signed off by an Accredited Motor Driving Instructor. Allan Miller can provide you with an Accredited Motor Driving Instructor to complete your tasks and sign off your CBT units. These instructors are also able to issue a Certificate of Competency. Driving lessons are 50 or 90 minutes long, and the number of lessons you require will vary depending on individual ability and the practice you can get outside of your lessons.

The difference with Allan Miller Driving School is:

  • we have a large team of instructors, we are confident we can find lesson dates and times to suit you
  • we tailor each lesson to match what you need to know
  • we are interested in making you a better driver
  • we are a professional driving school, experienced in training learner drivers
  • our driving instructors are patient, friendly and build confidence

September 2010 – Most people are unsure about when or if to indicate when leaving a roundabout. This is something that we should be aware of as the current penalty is 2 demerit points and the associated fine is approximately $240. The South Australian Handbook states: At all times, you should signal with your indicators to let other drivers know your intentions. Immediately before leaving the roundabout (i.e. when passing the exit before your exit) you must signal with your left indicator, unless it is impracticable to do so. This applies to turning left and right or continuing straight ahead. This tells drivers waiting to enter the roundabout where you intend to exit.
