How much do you charge for lessons? We offer a 90 minute lesson for $90. These prices are for lessons conducted in a safely maintained, dual-controlled driving school vehicle and include door-to-door pick up and drop off. There is a $20 administration fee payable on final CBT assessments and a VORT final assessment is $290 in our vehicle ($170 in your safe, roadworthy vehicle). Prices current as at 5 August 2010.
How many lessons will I need? This varies widely depending on the individual. Practice is vitally important to making progress between lessons, and everybody naturally learns at a different pace. Our instructors tailor each lesson to your learning needs and will let you know how you’re going.
W hat do I need to do to get my P-plates (P1 Provisional Licence)? Once you have your L-plates (Learner's Permit) you need to successfully complete your driver training and assessment under either the VORT (on road testing) or CBT (comptency based) system. You also need to log 50 hours of supervised driving experience. Refer to the South Australian Government website for full details of the licensing system.
What does VORT and CBT stand for? VORT means Vehicle On Road Test, this is the test conducted to ensure you are a safe and competent driver. CBT is short for Competency Based Training, commonly known as log book training. With CBT/log book training you log the amount of time you drive to document your readiness to drive. Currently you need 50 hours logged in your Driving Companion book to be eligible for a P1 Provisional Licence.
How long before I can have my full drivers licence? South Australia has a Graduated Licensing Scheme, which means that there is a stepped process to obtain a full licence. You can apply for a learner's permit at 16 years of age (this is a theory test). At 16½ you can obtain a P1 Provisional Licence after holding a Learner's licence for 6 months, and having completed 50 hours of supervised driving, and having passed a VORT (Vehicle On Road Test) or CBT (Competency Based Training) Course. At 17½ you can acheive your P2 Provisional Licence, by passing a Hazard Perception Test. Your full licence can be achieved at 19 years or older, but you need to hold your P2 licence for at least 6 months.
If I fail my VORT how long before I can take the test again? If you fail your VORT test (receive less than 90%) you must wait 14 days before you can take the test again. You must book your driving test a minimum of 3 full days before the date of the test.
Should I choose VORT or CBT? It is important to choose the best learning style for you to accomplish your P1 licence. The CBT process is a modern approach to driver training and assessment, whereby assessment takes place throughout the program of lessons. Any mistake can be re-trained and re-assessed maintaining the confidence of the learner, while progress and feedback is contantly recorded. The VORT is a method with one assessment at the end of the training program and the outcome is either a pass or fail. If the result is a fail, you will need to arrange another VORT.
Isn't it cheaper to take the VORT? Some people are able to cope well with an exam-based learning style. If you take the test and are not prepared, it can be a more expensive approach. The practical driving test requires that you perform 5 low speed manoeuvres and demonstrate general driving skills. The assessment criteria for these manoeuvres and skill is quite technical, and it is important that you understand what will be required. Allan Miller Driving School offers a pre-VORT lesson to go over the test requirements, so you are aware of the skills you will need to demonstrate in your test and common reasons why people fail.
Should I learn in an automatic or manual vehicle? It is easier to learn in an automatic, however if you plan on taking your test in a manual car, or drive one frequently, it is better to learn in a manual. Some students begin in an automatic and then transfer to a car with a manual transmission once they have more confidence.
Will you pick me up from school or home, or do I have to come to your office? Allan Miller Driving School instructors will come to your school or home as arranged to pick you up for your lessons.
Can my instructor give me my driving test? You can't take the driving test (VORT) with the same instructor from whom you've had driving lessons. Your instructor will recommend someone who can complete the VORT with you.
What is a Registered Training Organisation? A Registered Training Organisation (RTO) is an organisation registered within the national education system to deliver nationally accredited qualifications. For example, as an RTO we can train our own driving instructors by providing the Certificate IV in Transport and Logistics (Road Transport - Car Driving Instruction). RTOs must operate by procedures to ensure clients receive a high quality standard of training, and RTOs are audited against quality standards called the Australian Quality Training Framework to maintain their registration.
