Do you want to upgrade to HC directly from a car licence?
This class of licence will allow you to drive a semi-trailer with a maximum of one trailer, and heavy trucks towing dog trailers.
Normally to upgrade to a class HC licence, you must have held a class MR or HR licence for at least one year. In South Australia, you may upgrade directly to a class HC licence directly from a car licence by completing this course.
Pre-requisites:
- must have held a current car licence for 2 years (excluding any period of disqualification/suspension)
- must not have an offender history of driving or traffic offences *
- must not have a prescribed medical condition *
* if an applicant has an offender history, health issues or does not meet any other requirement for the issuing of an HC learner's permit/licence he or she may be refused such a permit/licence by the Registrar of Motor Vehicles. Applicants should check their eligibly at a Service SA Centre before enrolment.

At the completion of Modules 1 & 2, you will be issued a certificate. The certificate is to be taken to your local Service SA centre to obtain your learner's permit (a fee will be applicable for the learner's permit).
PRACTICAL - MODULE 3 This component of the course is your training and assessment in driving a 75% loaded, non-synchromesh HC vehicle via the Competency Based Training & Assessment (CBT&A) method. A ‘trainee guide’ will be provided to you on enrolment with details of all the tasks you must complete.
Course Delivery Modules 1 & 2 are delivered in a classroom format over two full consecutive days, usually over a weekend.
Module 3 is carried out in our HC vehicle on a one-to-one basis usually in three-hour training sessions. Training is competency based so we cannot guarantee the number of hours required to complete this program. Our experience has shown an average of 20-24 hours are normally required.
Course Assessment Trainees are required to successfully complete the following assessment tasks:
1. Give way test 2. Two multiple choice examinations 3. Practical assessment in vehicle (CBT&A)

Fees for the TILE course are:
$245 for the two-day theory course. Please see the HC page for practical training prices. Prices current as at 1 January 2010.
After completion Once you have successfully completed Modules 1, 2 & 3 of the TILE course you must present the following documents to your local Service SA centre to obtain your class HC licence:
- TILE Course Certificate indicating that Modules 1 and 2 and 3 have been completed successfully
- Certificate of Competency for Module 3
- HC learner's permit
Terms and conditions Upgrading to a class HC licence via the TILE course is governed by the following conditions set down by the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI):
- A HC learners permit will not be issued if at the time of submitting his or her learner's permit application the person no longer fulfils any of the requirements for the issuing of the learner's permit.
- A HC licence will not be issued if at the time of submitting his or her licence application the person no longer fulfils any of the requirements for the issuing of the licence.
- A trainee must complete the TILE course within 12 months of commencement of Module 1 and any trainee who fails to complete all modules of the course within that time will be required to re-commence the TILE course from the beginning.
- The trainee must complete Modules 1 and 2 successfully, and obtain a duly signed Certificate for Modules 1 and 2 before commencing Module 3.
- No recognition of any Prior Learning for Modules 1 or 2 is allowed. Recognition of Prior Learning in Module 3 is allowed provided that it complies with requirements in the HC Competency Based Training and Assessment Manual.

Grievance & Complaint Procedure
In the event of a client wishing to lodge a grievance or complaint, a formal or informal approach will initially need to be made to the trainer/assessor by the client or a nominated representative chosen by the client. This grievance/complaint will be recorded in writing by Allan Miller Driving School (AMDS).
If the grievance/complaint involves the client’s trainer/assessor, a formal or informal approach will need to be made to the Director by the client or a nominated representative. All attempts will be made by AMDS to resolve the grievance/complaint internally with all parties involved.
If the grievance/complaint cannot be resolved internally, an appropriate representative from the DTEI will be approached immediately to act as an objective and impartial arbitrator.
