Become an instructor

Being a Motor Driving Instructor (MDI) can be an interesting, rewarding and challenging career. Most MDIs are self-employed, so you should be ready for the risks (and rewards) of running your own business and being your own boss. Most of all, you need to enjoy teaching and value teaching a young adult to be a safe driver.

Allan Miller Transport Training offers the Certificate IV course you need to complete to become a licensed Motor Driving Instructor of heavy vehicles. Our course is very practical and hands-on, and being delivered by a leading driving school the training is strongly influenced by real-world situations and examples. This course is also nationally recognised.

Prior to us accepting your enrolment into the course, you must complete the application process first with the government via Service SA. Click here to view the pre-enrolment information and application process.

At any time feel free to give us a call to discuss the course, to help you determine whether being a driving instructor is the right career for you.

Course Delivery
In heavy vehicle courses, there is a combination of theory and practical on-road training to teach you the practical components required to become a Motor Driving Instructor (MDI).

The practical components are conducted on a 1-to-1 or 2-to-1 basis in one of our vehicles. This training is arranged in 3 hour sessions at mutually convenient times. Theory and practical sessions are supplemented by assigned self-study tasks and private practice.

The assessment is mainly through written assessment and observation of your driving and instructing skills.

Our course is led by Colin Greig, who has over 30 years experience as a Motor Driving Instructor and a track record of delivering quality training to his students.
